If you have an injury or health concern, it’s important to consult with your healthcare provider before taking a class. We strongly encourage clients to inform our instructors of any limitations or concerns before the class so they can modify exercises as needed. Depending on the injury, we may recommend private one-on-one sessions to support you properly!

Reformer Pilates is a full-body workout that uses a specialized piece of equipment called a reformer to improve strength, flexibility, balance, and coordination.
-
Reformer Pilates focuses on time under tension and emphasizes controlled fluid motions. People who practice reformer Pilates regularly will see increased strength, mobility, flexibility, better mood and much more.
-
Joseph Pilates started experimenting with resistance-based exercises (known as ‘Contrology’) during an internment camp in WWI by attaching springs to a bed to help patients move without having to stand up. His original prototype has since evolved into the dynamic reformer machines that you see in studios and gyms today.
-
Mat Pilates requires minimal equipment and typically focuses on exercises performed on a mat, primarily using body weight for resistance. Because reformer Pilates offers tension through the machine, it can provide a dynamic and challenging progression to your practice but is meant to be accessible to a wide range of audiences.
-
Classical Pilates is based on Joseph Pilates’ original method, which emphasizes a strict adherence to his sequencing as well as precision and control. Whereas, contemporary Pilates can incorporate props like a Pilates ball, ring and/or weights, is group-fitness based and uses music to enhance the experience. At Fortides we offer a contemporary spin on classical Pilates!
